Twitter Introduces Small House Ads

Twitter has never seemed too interested in making money; the company has let all sorts of clever suggestions regarding advertising opportunities slip by.  But with the introduction of some self-promotional lines of text, it looks like Twitter might - just maybe - be moving towards a solution.

Twitter House Ads

People are noticing one of two boxes when they sign into Twitter.  The first defines the word "widget" as "an easy way to show your tweets on another web site."  The second explains that Twitter Search is "a service for discovering what's happening right now."  Clicking on a box will lead you to the appropriate Twitter page.

For the moment, then, these are simply house ads.  Twitter's trying to drum up a little traffic for a couple of its most recent additions.  It has no real need to grab at cash considering the company raised $35 million in funding last month.

It's not hard to imagine links to outside sites being presented in the same boxes, though.  Twitter Japan already has display ads, so the introduction of something in the English-language version seems inevitable.

We'll keep an eye on those profile homepages to see what happens.  A hat tip goes to Hutch Carpenter.
