I admit it – the chaos of the holiday season, especially Cyber Monday, got us a bit distracted from our biweekly “Talking With…” profiles. But we’re bringing back the series with a bang, featuring Mitch Joel, the president of digital marketing agency Twist Image and an active member of the Shop.org community. Mitch offers some [...]

Best Buy said today it is partnering with online video provider CinemaNow to create a movie download service that would be built into most of the electronic devices it sells that can be connected to the Internet. Best Buy said it has entered into a multi-year agreement to license Sonic Solutions' Roxio CinemaNow technology. Under terms of the agreement, Best Buy acquired warrants enabling it to purchase shares of Sonic Solutions common stock. The new service, which is yet to be named, will allow...

One of the sessions at Shop.org 2009 that I thought it probably best I attend, was the “Twitter and Social Media All-Stars” panel that ran on the first day of the conference. The panel was moderated by Denise Zimmerman, President & CSO of NetPlus Marketing and had three social media-focused representatives for commerce companies with [...]

A recruitment ad for a Sr. Manager – Emerging Media Marketing Job at US retailer Best Buy includes an item under the ‘Preferred Qualifications’ heading that applicants have “250 plus followers on Twitter .” I guess it’s one way of noting a preference that applicants are savvy, active and connected in the twittersphere and, by implication, might have a better understanding of how social media tools like this work in a business context. I’m not surprised to...

What Do You Think Of The New Napster? I've spent some time on the new Napster service over the last few days, and aside from a less than intuitive interface, I can't find much to dislike. At just $5 a month for unlimited streaming of a deep catalog along with 5 mp3's monthly, the service is effectively free. And if I'm in Napster previewing a track or album (and since they've already got my credit card), why not just buy it there instead of jumping over to Amazon or iTunes? Reports...

It looks like Best Buy is getting into the business of offering movies for download. This could step up competition with the likes of iTunes and Amazon, and even Netflix really. The concept is a product of Best Buy partnering with CinemaNow, the same company that Blockbuster has dealt with to offer movies through set-top devices. According to Variety : Details on how exactly Best Buy would benefit from a potential partnership with CinemaNow, and others, are still being finalized. But one possibility...

Circuit City closing down was obviously good news for electronics retailer competitors. But which ones are reaping the benefits the most? They are whom you’d expect: Best Buy and Wal-Mart. Hitwise reports on where online consumers go after being greeted with CircuitCity.com’s Sorry-we’re-closed message. Twenty percent of them float downstream to Best Buy’s website. Ten percent go to Wal-Mart, followed by Kmart.com and Sears.com with four and two percent respectively. These...

It was recently brought to public attention that the late Circuit City had a message on its site claiming that it would be re-opening online in "the coming weeks." The message suggested that while its brick and mortar stores were gone, the company might continue as a web-only entity. Commenting on WebProNews , Doug Meacham of NextUp says: Any relaunch of circuitcity.com will be in name only. As part of the liquidation of the corporation's assets, the URL for the site was put up for...

Early this year, Circuit City announced that it was closing all of its stores after being in business for 60 years. Gizmodo is pointing to a screenshot from Circuit City's website now, however, suggesting that the company will be back in online form. As you can see, the site is not operational at the moment, but will be soon. How will it do though if it does re-open though? The brick and mortar version of Circuit City obviously couldn't cut the mustard any longer, but the company's online...

Last month Best Buy announced a new social and API-driven initiative to give its web business a boost. The Best Buy Remix Developer Network comes with an affiliate plan that lets developers earn commissions if the traffic they send to BestBuy.com results in a sale. "When you direct a visitor from your Web site to BestBuy.com and they make a qualifying purchase, you can earn commission dollars," a Best Buy spokesperson tells WebProNews. "The more your visitors buy, the more money you...

According to a blog post by Best Buy CMO Barry Judge; "We have a new team at Best Buy called the Secondary Market Team. Most people don’t have a clear idea of our vision in this area or what the team is doing. This is a team that gets me very excited about the future at Best Buy, let me tell you why. Secondary markets refers to all the buying and selling involved in “non fresh” product. Things like vendor overstock, consumer returns, refurbished, used, etc. that are often sold through alternative channels like auction sites, clearance centers, overstock stores, etc. You might be shocked to learn that secondary market electronics sales represent an estimated $15B market in the United State. This is a space where Best Buy has only just touched the surface of all the opportunity. Getting our “fair share” of sales in this market is easily a $1B revenue opportunity for us." What this ultimately means to the secondary market is unclear as Best Buy is in the planning stages, but it is...

Best Buy alienated affiliates last week when they slashed the commission rate for the Wii and laptops from 1% to .25%. Affiliate Michael Coley of Amazing-Bargains.com started up a thread on ABestWeb about the issue (A New Low - Best Buy Laptop & Wii Commissions Dropped to 0.25%!), and is not being received well by affiliates. Personally, [...]

Norma Rae : Forget it! I'm stayin' right where I am. It's gonna take you and the police department and the fire department and the National Guard to get me outta here! It appears that some eBay sellers have finally had it; the changes, the fees, the declining sales, the back-room deals with Buy.com and other Internet 500 retailers, the uncertainty and for many small sellers, no real viable alternatives. No, they aren't screaming for a union, like Norma Rae, but they want a return to the eBay they helped build and they want Buy.com and the big retailers off their site. In the past, sellers have voiced their outrage at eBay management, trying to get the press to see their plight, they've tried boycotts, protests, talked of class action lawsuits and more, but nothing really came of it. Now it appears their tactics are changing, or more accurately their "focus" is changing. Let me lay the groundwork: Earlier this year, eBay negotiated a special deal with Internet...
