About a month ago, Facebook announced that it was acquiring FriendFeed . Today the company announced it is open sourcing Tornado , a web server framework originally developed by the FriendFeed team. Tornado is designed to handle thousands of connections at the same time. "As real-time updates continue to be an important feature of the social Web, developers can now leverage this powerful tool to more easily build and scale their real-time environments," a spokesperson for Facebook tells...

Facebook confused some users when it accidentally invited too many people to a beta test of what is being referred to as "Facebook Lite." Facebook Lite is basically a stripped down verson of the social network, which includes just status updates, likes, and comments, without things like activity stories, app stories, and embedded content. Facebook Lite has been compared to Twitter and FriendFeed, due to its simplicity. This was probably particularly interesting to those users who experienced...

There is a lot of discussion going on about Facebook, FriendFeed, Twitter, and real-time search. This is to be expected since yesterday it was announced that Facebook is acquiring FriendFeed. Hitwise has shared some data regarding FriendFeed's popularity in the UK. It's growing fast, and has increased by 180% over the last 12 months in terms of traffic. It's nowhere near what Facebook or Twitter get, but Hitwise's Robin Goad says that "visitors to FriendFeed are typical early...

Google is working on an update called Caffeine , which will increase the speed at which it indexes content. This could be a step toward Google's incarnation of real-time search. Facebook has just started rolling out its own real-time search feature , much like Twitter's, which has been around for some time. Facebook has also bought FriendFeed , which already has a good real-time search feature that searches content across many social sites, based on what its users share. So here we are talking...

Facebook has begun rolling out a new version of its search feature, which it began testing with a select few last month. Of course, this would be real-time search, in the company's latest effort to move into Twitter territory. Of course the announcement of Facebook's real-time search comes hot off the heels of their big announcement about the acquisition of FriendFeed , which comes with a pretty nifty real-time search engine of its own. But that's a different story . With regards to Facebook's...

In July, Friendfeed launched version 2 of its API in beta . The company said it was focusing on making it simpler and easier to use. Now the API has already left beta status . Two weeks was apparently long enough to gather the necessary feedback and implement some changes accordingly. That doesn't mean they're opposed to receiving more feedback however. They're encouraging it in the FriendFeed API group . Besides removing the beta label from the API, FriendFeed added support for OAuth...

FriendFeed announced today that it has released version 2 of the FriendFeed API for beta testing. The focus, according to the company, is making the API simpler to use. "FriendFeed seems to be staying one (or two or three) step(s) ahead of Twitter in everything they do," notes Jesse Stay of the Stay N' Alive blog. "Today FriendFeed released their real-time stream of data in beta to any and all developers wishing to write applications. Unlike Twitter, there is no application necessary...

If your business didn't have enough reasons to set up a FriendFeed account before, it has a very good one now. Last week, FriendFeed launched its real-time search feature . Results for this roll in when something that fits the query is posted somewhere. Think Twitter Search , only covering a bunch of services. Do you believe FriendFeed's real-time search is significant? Today FriendFeed has launched a real-time search feature. Now when you perform a search on the service, you will be presented with real-time results as they roll in. That means you don't have to continuously refresh for the latest results. If you're searching a particularly hot topic, you might find it hard to even browse results because they're coming in so quickly. Luckily FriendFeed has acknowledged this. "While we were testing this internally, we could barely keep up with the...

Previously, users were able to upload photos, but now other documents like PDFs and spreadsheets can be shared. "This has been an especially popular request from organizations and companies that collaborate using FriendFeed groups," says Dan Hsiao on the FriendFeed Blog. Friendfeed has been tinkering with a new real-time design at beta.friendfeed.com . The real-time version allows all pages to update in real-time, so users can see their friends' photos, messages, comments, and likes as they occur. A post from Bret Taylor at the Friendfeed Blog says that they didn't set out with the goal of a radical redesign, but simply wanted to make it more intuitive, consistent, and elegant. As a result, the new design features: - A consistent look for entries, no matter...
