As people return home this holiday season, there will be all sorts of hugs and "have you had enough to eat"s. Then they'll be pressed into service, lifting heavy stuff or perhaps climbing ladders. And Google would very much appreciate it if visitors install the company's software, too. A new post on the Official Google Blog about "unofficial tech support" isn't blatantly self-promotional at first. Jeffrey Chang of the Google Chrome Team wrote, "[T]o ensure your...

Some time ago, Google established a tradition of sending top AdSense and AdWords users holiday gifts. This year, it's departing from that routine. But people are going to have a hard time complaining about the decision, because instead, Google's committed $20 million to a group of charities. AdSense and AdWords partners received messages today that announced the move by saying, "We hope you'll find it fits the spirit of the holiday season." A special "Happy Holidays from...

Somewhere in there is design, and more importantly, usability. With said holiday season in full swing, it can't hurt to brush up on a few usability...

It is, of course, the thought that counts. A message from a friend or loved one means a lot regardless of what form it takes. Still, physical items tend to have more of an impact, and Google's made a very nice gesture by offering to send out real postcards this holiday season. A Google representative wrote in an email to WebProNews, "As a token of our appreciation to our most enthusiastic fans, we're snail mailing (!) one free holiday postcard on their behalf." People who take Google...

Google has used its Insights for Search tool to provide some data about consumers' searching behavior when it comes to things like discounts, free shipping for the holidays, coupons, and promotional codes. Unsurprisingly, there is an uptick in searches for all of these things, indicating that this is the stuff consumers are after for their holiday shopping. Such data serves as a great indicator that e-commerce businesses should be providing this stuff if at all possible. Without such deals, online...
